Quick Answer

Battery: 2011–2012: 100.8 V NiMH · 2013–2016: 144 V lithium-ion

Most common codes: P0A7F, P1449, P1447 — see our Honda IMA code guide

Good to know: NiMH and lithium CR-Z packs are not interchangeable without changes

Typical fix: Test first, then repair or rebuild

The CR-Z is Honda’s sporty IMA hybrid coupe. Early cars use a NiMH pack; from 2013, Honda switched to a higher-voltage lithium-ion pack. Testing tells us which repair path makes sense.

CR-Z: What Owners Should Know

  • The CR-Z used a NiMH IMA pack for 2011–2012 and switched to a 144-volt lithium-ion pack from 2013 onward.
  • The early CR-Z battery design is closely related to the 2010–2014 Insight.
  • Because the CR-Z is a sporty car with a manual-transmission option, owners may notice lost assist when cells weaken.
  • Swapping a lithium pack into a 2011–2012 car is not a simple plug-in job. Call us to talk through the options for your year.
  • Check your VIN for open recalls on NHTSA.gov before paying for any hybrid repair.

Common Symptoms

  • IMA and check engine lights on
  • Assist gauge shows little or no assist
  • Charge gauge jumps up and down (“recals”)
  • Engine works harder and MPG drops
  • Auto-stop stops working

Problems We See Most

Weak NiMH sticks (2011–2012)

Uneven cells cause recals and lost assist.

Lithium pack faults (2013–2016)

We read cell data and check the control modules before any repair.

Software

Check for Honda updates.

On the CR-Z, battery-related codes include P0A7F, P1449, P1447 and P1435. Some mean the pack needs work; others point to sensors, the fan or software — see our Honda IMA code guide.
