Chevrolet has built very different hybrids, from a 36-volt mild hybrid to the plug-in Volt, and the right test, repair and price depend on which one you have. DFW Hybrid Battery works on Chevrolet hybrids across North Dallas, and we always find the real cause before recommending anything.

Chevrolet Hybrids and Their Batteries

ModelU.S. yearsBatteryGood to know
Malibu Hybrid (BAS mild hybrid)2008–2010NiMH, 36 volts (three 12-volt cassettes)Belt Alternator Starter system; pack behind the rear seat. The Saturn Vue and Aura Green Line used the same system
Tahoe Hybrid2008–2013NiMH, 300 voltsGM Two-Mode system; pack in a metal case under the second-row seat
Silverado Hybrid2009–2013NiMH, 300 voltsSame Two-Mode system as the Tahoe Hybrid, also shared with the GMC Yukon and Sierra hybrids
Volt (plug-in hybrid)2011–2019Lithium-ion: 16 kWh (first generation), 18.4 kWh (2016–2019)Large T-shaped pack in the center tunnel; a gas engine extends the range
Malibu Hybrid2016–2019Lithium-ion, 1.5 kWh, 80 cellsUses motors and power electronics adapted from the Volt; pack in the trunk

The older Malibu Hybrid and the Two-Mode trucks use NiMH packs, which are built from modules we can test one by one. The Volt and the newer Malibu Hybrid use lithium-ion packs controlled closely by a battery management system, and they are diagnosed and repaired differently.

Common Symptoms and Warning Messages

Volt: “Propulsion Power is Reduced”

This message does not always mean a failing pack. A GM bulletin for 2011–2012 Volts traced some cases with no trouble codes to an over-discharged pack and a controls issue, fixed with a software update and a capacity reset. On 2016–2019 Volts, GM notes that “Reduced Propulsion Power” or “Speed Limited” messages can come from low drive-unit fluid or an out-of-date battery capacity estimate.

Volt: shrinking electric range

Range that keeps dropping over months is worth testing before talking about any repair.

2008–2010 Malibu Hybrid: system shutting down

The 36-volt pack shuts the hybrid system down when it overheats; temperature sensors and the cooling fan are common causes. Battery-related codes on this system fall in the P1A22–P1A59 range.

Tahoe and Silverado Hybrid: warning lights, weak assist

These NiMH packs are now 13 to 18 years old. Warning lights, less electric assist and falling fuel economy are typical signs of weak modules. A truck that sat for months may need a slow external hybrid battery charge before testing. See our hybrid battery codes guide.

Weak 12-volt battery

On the BAS Malibu Hybrid, a dead 12-volt battery can let the car run for only a short time before it stops, and a jump-start won’t fix it. We always check the 12-volt battery first.

Check Your Warranty First

GM covered the Volt’s battery pack, charger and electric drive components for 8 years / 100,000 miles (10 years / 150,000 miles in states that follow California emission rules; Texas is not one). The 2016–2019 Malibu Hybrid was launched with an 8-year warranty on its battery and electric drive components, with a mileage limit. A late Volt or Malibu Hybrid may still be covered, so ask a Chevrolet dealer to check your VIN before you pay for a repair.

The Two-Mode trucks and the 2008–2010 Malibu Hybrid are old enough that their original hybrid coverage has ended. The federal emissions warranty on major emission components is 8 years / 80,000 miles.

How DFW Hybrid Battery Handles a Chevrolet Hybrid

We scan the hybrid system, read live battery data, check the 12-volt battery, cooling and connections, and test the pack before recommending anything. Most jobs are done at your home or work; when a repair needs it, we can bring the car to our shop.

NiMH packs (Two-Mode trucks, 2008–2010 Malibu Hybrid)

We test the modules, charge and balance the pack, and look at module repair or a rebuild where the pack design allows it. If the pack isn’t worth saving, we explain replacement options: new, remanufactured or tested-used.

Lithium-ion packs (Volt, 2016–2019 Malibu Hybrid)

Lithium-ion packs are handled differently. Some warnings come from software, the battery management system or a capacity estimate rather than the cells, and real cell problems are usually addressed at the module or cell-group level. Depending on what testing shows and which parts are available, the right answer may be a targeted repair or a replacement — and we’ll tell you plainly when replacement is the better choice.

Chevrolet Hybrid Battery Prices

There is no fixed rebuild price for Chevrolet hybrids because a 1.5 kWh Malibu pack, a 300-volt truck pack and an 18.4 kWh Volt pack are very different jobs. The on-site diagnostic is $150 in our service area and 100% credited toward the repair ($200 elsewhere in DFW, 50% credited). After testing, you get a written quote for repair, rebuild or replacement before any work begins. For general pricing, see our hybrid battery prices. Warranty: 1 to 3 years depending on the vehicle’s condition and mileage, provided in writing before work begins.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can you repair a Chevy Volt battery?

Often the first step is finding out whether it is the battery at all, since some Volt power messages come from software or a capacity estimate. If the pack has a real fault, we explain whether a targeted repair or a replacement makes sense, with a quote after testing.

Is the Malibu Hybrid battery the same as the Volt’s?

No. The 2016–2019 Malibu Hybrid borrows motors and power electronics from the Volt, but its battery is a much smaller 1.5 kWh, 80-cell lithium-ion pack.

Do you work on Tahoe and Silverado hybrid batteries?

Yes. These Two-Mode trucks use a 300-volt NiMH pack, and we test it module by module, then quote repair, rebuild or replacement.

What about the 2008–2010 Malibu Hybrid?

It is a mild hybrid with a 36-volt NiMH pack. We check the 12-volt battery, cooling fan and temperature sensors along with the pack, then quote the repair.

How much does Chevrolet hybrid battery repair cost?

There is no fixed price for Chevrolet hybrids. The diagnostic is $150 in our service area and fully credited toward the repair; the repair, rebuild or replacement is quoted after testing.
