Quick Answer

Battery: 2005–2007: 144 V NiMH (IMA) · 2014–2017: lithium-ion, about 260 V, 72 cells · 2018: lithium-ion, 259.2 V, 72 cells

Location: Behind the rear seat (2005–2017) · under the rear seat (2018)

Most common codes: See our Honda IMA code guide for 2005–2007; newer models use different codes

Check first: Newer Accord Hybrids may still be under Honda coverage — check with your VIN

Typical fix: Test first, then repair or rebuild

The Accord Hybrid has used two very different systems: the 2005–2007 IMA V6 hybrid with a NiMH pack, and the 2014-and-later two-motor hybrid with a lithium-ion pack (behind the rear seat through 2017, under the rear seat from 2018). Honda did not sell an Accord Hybrid for 2016. We test both before recommending any work.

Accord Hybrid: What Owners Should Know

  • Three very different Accord Hybrids came before 2019: the 2005–2007 V6 IMA hybrid (144-volt NiMH), the 2014–2017 two-motor hybrid (about 260-volt lithium-ion, 72 cells) and the 2018 10th-generation model (259.2-volt lithium-ion under the rear seat).
  • Honda did not sell an Accord Hybrid for 2016.
  • The 2005–2007 packs are now very old. Testing shows whether a repair is worth it on these cars.
  • On the lithium models, warnings are often caused by other components, so we read the battery data before any repair.
  • Check your VIN for open recalls on NHTSA.gov before paying for any hybrid repair.

Common Symptoms

  • IMA and check engine lights on
  • Assist gauge shows little or no assist
  • Charge gauge jumps up and down (“recals”)
  • Engine works harder and MPG drops
  • Auto-stop stops working

Problems We See Most

Old IMA packs (2005–2007)

These packs are well past their design life. Testing shows if a repair is worth it.

Lithium packs (2014+)

Many warnings come from software or other components. We check before blaming the cells.

Battery fan and vents

Keep the rear-seat vents clear.

Warning Codes on the Accord Hybrid

On the Accord Hybrid, battery-related codes include P0A7F, P1449, P1447 and P1435. Some mean the pack needs work; others point to sensors, the fan or software — see our Honda IMA code guide.
