Quick Answer

Battery: 2010–2012: 275 V NiMH · 2013–2020: lithium-ion, about 300 V

Location: Trunk, behind the rear seat

Most common codes: P0A80, P0A7F, P0A1F, P0A81 — see our Ford hybrid code guide

Twin models: Mercury Milan Hybrid (2010–2011) and Lincoln MKZ Hybrid

Typical fix: Test first — fans and control modules cause many warnings

The Fusion Hybrid is one of the most common Ford hybrids in DFW. The first generation (2010–2012) uses a NiMH pack; the second generation (2013–2020) switched to a lithium-ion pack lying flat behind the rear seat. Both can show warnings that are not the cells at all.

Fusion Hybrid: What Owners Should Know

  • The 2010–2012 Fusion Hybrid uses a 275-volt NiMH pack. The 2013–2020 model uses a lithium-ion pack of about 300 volts lying flat behind the rear seat.
  • Ford bulletins and our own experience show that the battery cooling fans (P0A81, P0A96) and the battery energy control module (P0A1F) cause many warnings that look like a dead battery.
  • Ford covers hybrid-unique components for 8 years / 100,000 miles. Late Fusion Hybrids with low miles may still be covered — check by VIN.
  • The Fusion Hybrid shares its system with the Lincoln MKZ Hybrid and, for 2010–2011, the Mercury Milan Hybrid.
  • Check your VIN for open recalls on NHTSA.gov before paying for any hybrid repair.

Common Symptoms

  • “Check Hybrid System” or a hybrid warning light
  • Car won’t go into READY or shuts down
  • Engine runs constantly and MPG drops
  • Reduced power or limp mode
  • Warnings that come and go

Problems We See Most

Battery cooling fan

A clogged or failed fan (P0A81, P0A96) overheats the pack. Cleaning or replacing it is far cheaper than a battery.

Battery control module

P0A1F points to the battery energy control module, not necessarily the cells.

Real cell or module wear

When testing confirms it, we explain repair and rebuild options.

Warning Codes on the Fusion Hybrid

On the Fusion Hybrid, the most common codes are P0A80 and P0A7F, plus P0A1F (battery control module) and P0A81 / P0A96 (cooling fans) — see our Ford hybrid code guide.

How Long Does the Fusion Hybrid Battery Last?

The 2010–2012 Fusion Hybrid uses a 275 V NiMH pack — these cars are now 14–16 years old, so module wear is normal. From 2013 the Fusion Hybrid uses lithium-ion, which usually ages more slowly; on those cars a warning is more often a fan, sensor or control-module problem than worn cells.

Fusion Hybrid: Is It the Battery — or Something Else?

Not every hybrid warning means the battery is bad. On a Fusion Hybrid, these are the look-alike problems we rule out before quoting a battery repair:

  • Battery cooling fan (P0A81 / P0A96). On Ford hybrids these codes often mean a fan or a blocked cabin-air vent near the rear seat, not a dead battery.
  • Battery control module (P0A1F). The module that watches the pack can fail on its own.
  • A weak 12-volt battery. If the 12 V battery is weak, a Fusion Hybrid may not go into READY or may show several warnings at once. It is the cheapest thing to rule out, so we test it first.

How DFW Hybrid Battery Handles a Fusion Hybrid

We read the Ford-specific codes, check the battery energy control module (BECM) data, cell or module voltages and the cooling fan, and explain whether a repair, rebuild or replacement makes sense.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can a Fusion Hybrid battery fan be cleaned instead of replaced?

Often, yes. If the fan motor still works, cleaning the fan and duct can bring temperatures back to normal.

Is the Fusion Hybrid battery the same as the Lincoln MKZ Hybrid?

For the same years, yes — they share the hybrid system.

Is the Fusion Energi the same?

No. The Energi is a plug-in with a much larger battery. Call us about it.
