Quick Answer

Battery: 300-volt nickel-metal hydride (NiMH)

Location: Under the second-row seat

Same system: GM two-mode hybrid: Silverado Hybrid, GMC Yukon and Sierra Hybrid, Cadillac Escalade Hybrid

Typical fix: Test first, then repair or rebuild

The Tahoe Hybrid (2008–2013) uses GM’s two-mode hybrid system with a 300-volt NiMH battery under the second-row seat. The same system was used in the Silverado, GMC Yukon and Sierra, and Cadillac Escalade hybrids.

Tahoe Hybrid: What Owners Should Know

  • The 2008–2013 Tahoe Hybrid uses GM’s two-mode system with a 300-volt NiMH battery under the second-row seat.
  • The same system was used in the GMC Yukon Hybrid, Silverado and Sierra Hybrid, and Cadillac Escalade Hybrid, so our testing applies to all of them.
  • Every two-mode truck is now well past its original battery coverage.
  • These are heavy trucks, so a weak battery is often noticed first as reduced electric assist and worse city MPG.
  • Check your VIN for open recalls on NHTSA.gov before paying for any hybrid repair.

Common Symptoms

  • Service hybrid system warning
  • Engine runs constantly
  • Reduced power or no electric assist
  • Lower MPG

Problems We See Most

Aging NiMH modules

These packs are now old. Testing shows whether a repair is worth it.

Cooling

Keep the battery cooling path clear.

Other two-mode faults

Not every warning is the battery — we test first.

Warning Codes on the Tahoe Hybrid

Two-mode hybrids can set P0A80, P0A7F and P0AFA, among others. See our hybrid error code guide.

How Long Does the Tahoe Hybrid Battery Last?

The Tahoe Hybrid uses a nickel-metal hydride (NiMH) pack. NiMH packs commonly last around 10–15 years, but North Texas heat ages the modules faster — especially on cars that sit outside in summer. The first Tahoe Hybrid models (2008) are now 18 years old and even the newest (2013) is 13, so some module wear is normal at this age. It rarely happens to all modules at once: usually a few weak modules pull the whole pack down, which is why we test every module before quoting. The same two-mode system is used in the Silverado, Yukon, Sierra and Escalade Hybrid.

Tahoe Hybrid: Is It the Battery — or Something Else?

Not every hybrid warning means the battery is bad. On a Tahoe Hybrid, these are the look-alike problems we rule out before quoting a battery repair:

  • A weak 12-volt battery. If the 12 V battery is weak, a Tahoe Hybrid may not go into READY or may show several warnings at once. It is the cheapest thing to rule out, so we test it first.
  • Two-mode transmission faults. The electric motors live inside the two-mode transmission. Faults there set their own codes and are a separate repair from the battery.
  • A clogged battery cooling intake or fan. The pack under the second-row seat is cooled with cabin air. Dust, pet hair or bags blocking the intake make it run hot and set battery codes early — sometimes cleaning is the whole fix.
