P0AFA & P0B3B–P0B83: Hybrid Battery Voltage-Sensing Codes
When the Problem Is the Wires That Measure the Battery — Not the Battery Cells

Quick Answer
P0AFA definition: “Hybrid Battery System Voltage Low.”
P0B3B–P0B83: A family of generic codes for “Hybrid Battery Voltage Sense” circuits (circuit, range/performance, low, high, intermittent).
What they usually mean: The battery computer can’t read one or more battery sections correctly — often a wiring, connection or sensing-board problem.
Common causes: Loose sense-lead nuts after a module replacement, acid/electrolyte corrosion wicking into the sense harness, or a damaged battery smart unit.
Good news: The cells themselves may be fine.
How Toyota Detects P0AFA
A Toyota repair-manual excerpt describes P0AFA as a one-trip code that sets when the voltage of a battery block reads below 2 volts, or when all blocks read between about −24 and 2 volts. In other words, the computer sees a voltage that is physically unrealistic for a working block. That points to an open circuit in the voltage-sensing lines, and Toyota lists the junction block (bus bar module), the No. 2 frame wire, and the battery ECU as trouble areas.
In practice, P0AFA often appears right after someone has replaced modules and a sense lead or bus bar nut wasn’t tightened properly.
The P0B3B–P0B83 Range on 2010–2015 Prius
On the third-generation Prius, an experienced Toyota hybrid shop explains that codes from P0B3D to P0B83 typically indicate a problem with the block-monitoring circuits or the battery control unit, rather than the cells. The usual story: electrolyte leaks from module terminals, travels along the inside of the sense-wire insulation “like a hose,” and corrodes the battery smart unit. Because Toyota doesn’t sell the sense harness separately, the fix is either repairing the board and wiring or replacing the battery assembly.
Each code in this range refers to a specific voltage-sense channel and condition. Exact channel assignments vary by model, so the circuit has to be traced on the vehicle.
Other Brands
Ford Escape Hybrid
Owners have reported P0AFA (sometimes with a “-16” suffix, circuit voltage below threshold). In at least one documented no-start case, the root cause turned out to be a faulty powertrain control module, not the battery.
Honda IMA hybrids
Honda uses its own codes for the same idea, such as P1568 and P1570 sub-code 66, “Battery Module Individual Voltage Input Problem.” See the Honda IMA guide.
Diagnosis Steps
1. Check recent history
Was the battery recently repaired or replaced? Loose or misplaced sense leads are a common cause after module work.
2. Compare reported vs. actual voltages
If the computer reports a block at 0 V while the modules measure normal voltage, the sensing path is the problem.
3. Inspect for corrosion
With the pack opened safely, inspect bus bars, sense terminals and the harness for electrolyte residue.
4. Test the battery ECU / smart unit
Corrosion or internal damage to the measuring board can produce these codes even with good cells.
Safety note: Hybrid batteries run at roughly 200–300+ volts DC and can stay dangerous even with the car off. The testing steps on this page are for trained technicians — owners should only read the codes. Never open the battery cover, pull the service plug, or unplug high-voltage cables without hybrid training and insulated safety equipment.
How DFW Hybrid Battery Handles These Codes
We compare what the computer reports with what the modules actually measure. That single step often saves owners from buying a battery when the real problem is a loose connection, a corroded sense lead, or the measuring board.
Frequently Asked Questions
My battery was just repaired and now I have P0AFA. Why?
The most likely cause is a sense lead or bus bar connection that wasn’t properly tightened or reconnected. The shop that did the work should check it.
Can corroded bus bars be cleaned?
Sometimes. Lightly corroded bus bars can be cleaned or replaced; severe corrosion that has reached the sense harness or ECU needs more extensive repair.
