Quick Answer

Battery: Lithium-ion polymer, not NiMH

Most common codes: P1B70, P1B77, P1B25, P1B76 — see our Hyundai/Kia code guide

Check first: Software updates, the safety plug fuse and the power relay assembly (PRA)

Warranty: Some Sonata Hybrids have lifetime battery coverage for the original owner — check before paying

Full pack rebuild: $1,600 (2012–2015) · $2,000 (2016–2019)

The Sonata Hybrid is the second most common hybrid we work on. Its lithium battery and battery management system (BMS) behave very differently from a Toyota NiMH pack — and many “bad battery” warnings turn out to be cheaper parts.

Problems We See Most

P1B70 — battery voltage too low

Hyundai bulletin 19-HC-002H addresses P1B70 on 2011–2015 Sonata Hybrids with a software update. Real failures happen too — see our 2015 Sonata Hybrid BMS case study.

Safety plug fuse and PRA

Codes like P1B77, P1B25, P1B76 and P0A0D often point to the safety plug fuse or the power relay assembly. A Canadian recall (2023104) replaced the safety plug fuse on 2013–2015 Sonata Hybrids.

No READY / won’t start

See our 2017 Sonata Hybrid no-start case — the cause was a pack safety disconnect triggered by swollen modules.

Blocked air intake

Hyundai’s warranty excludes damage from a blocked or wet battery air intake on the rear shelf. Keep it clear.

Check Your Warranty First

Hyundai lists lifetime hybrid battery coverage for the original owner on 2012–2019 Sonata Hybrids; later owners get 10 years / 100,000 miles from first sale. The 2011 Sonata Hybrid has 10 years / 100,000 miles. If you might be covered, contact a Hyundai dealer with your VIN first.

How DFW Hybrid Battery Handles a Sonata Hybrid

We read the Hyundai-specific codes, check bulletins and campaigns, test the safety plug fuse, the PRA and the BMS data, and only then look at cell-level repair or a rebuild.

★★★★★What customers say

“Jay, the hybrid battery expert, was prompt, highly knowledgeable, honest and easy to communicate. I called him on a Saturday. He finished his job and swing by to check my hybrid Sonata Battery. Actually 3 months back the Hyundai dealer had told me to replace the hybrid battery which would have cost me $12,000 approx. The car likely wouldn’t sell for more than 6000. However since other than some signs that appeared on the dadh to check the hybrid system, from time to time, it was a reliable car. Jay came, checked and found the battery to be 95% good and suggested no need for a hybrid replacement. Next time if there is a hybrid issue, I’ll first call him and also recommend my friends to him. His charge could have not been beaten by anyone else. 5*”
