Hybrid Battery Error Codes
A Practical Guide to Toyota, Lexus, Hyundai, Kia, Honda and Ford Hybrid Battery Codes
✓ Built from factory service bulletins and real repairs
✓ Learn which codes really mean “battery” — and which don’t
✓ Mobile testing by DFW Hybrid Battery — we come to you
A hybrid warning light usually comes with one or more diagnostic trouble codes (DTCs). Some point straight at the battery. Many others point to cooling fans, fuses, relays, software, sensors or the inverter — parts that cost far less than a new battery. This guide collects the codes we see most, explains what each one really means, and links to detailed pages for each.

Before You Start: How to Read Hybrid Codes
- P0 codes (for example P0A80) are standardized, but brands still use some of them differently.
- P1, P3 and seven-character codes (for example P1B70, P3000, P1AC000) are manufacturer-specific.
- INFO codes and sub-codes matter. Toyota stores INFO numbers (P3000 INFO 123) and Honda stores two-digit sub-codes (P1449-78). The same main code can mean very different things.
- One code rarely tells the whole story. Read every stored code, including pending ones, before deciding anything.

Codes That Are Usually NOT the Hybrid Battery
These codes can bring up the same scary hybrid warnings, but the battery cells are not the usual cause:
- P0A93 — Inverter cooling system performance (inverter coolant pump or cooling system)
- P0A94 — DC/DC converter performance
- P0AC4 — Hybrid control module requested the check engine light (a “see other codes” message on many cars)
- C1241 — Low battery positive voltage, usually the 12-volt battery or charging system
- Hyundai/Kia P1B25, P1B77, P0A0D — usually the safety plug fuse or relay assembly
- Hyundai/Kia P0705 — transmission range switch
- Ford P0A81 / P0A96 — battery cooling fans
What to Do When You See a Hybrid Code
1. Write down every code
Include pending codes, INFO numbers and sub-codes. A photo of the scan tool screen is perfect.
2. Check the 12-volt battery
A weak 12V battery can cause no-starts and confusing warnings on many hybrids.
3. Look up bulletins and warranty
Many hybrids have factory software fixes, recalls, or long battery warranties. A dealer can check by VIN.
4. Look at the cooling intake
Dust and pet hair on the battery air intake are a common, preventable cause of overheating codes.
5. Get the battery tested before buying one
Block voltages under load, capacity and resistance testing, and a check of fuses, relays and sensors show whether the battery is really the problem.
Safety note: Hybrid batteries run at roughly 200–300+ volts DC and can stay dangerous even with the car off. The owner checks on this page are limited to reading codes and looking at accessible vents and filters. Never open the battery cover, pull the service plug, or unplug high-voltage cables without hybrid training and insulated safety equipment.
How DFW Hybrid Battery Handles These Codes
DFW Hybrid Battery is a mobile hybrid battery service based in Frisco. We come to your home or workplace, read every hybrid code and sub-code, test the battery and the systems around it, and give you a written report. Then we explain your options — repair, reconditioning, or replacement — in plain language.
Real Repair Case Studies
- 2015 Hyundai Sonata Hybrid P1B70 — BMS failure
- 2017 Hyundai Sonata Hybrid — no-start diagnosis

Real case: P0AA6 did not mean a bad battery
A 2008 Prius in Fort Worth with P0AA6, P0A08 and P0A09 had been told it needed a hybrid battery. Diagnosis showed a high-voltage isolation fault with several possible sources, so no battery was recommended. Read the 2008 Prius P0AA6 case study.
