The Prius is the hybrid we see most in Dallas–Fort Worth. Each generation uses a different battery layout, different codes and a different price, so this page is organized by generation. Many Gen 2 and Gen 3 cars are on their original battery — and North Texas heat speeds up battery wear. The good news: a failing Prius pack is usually repairable. Wondering how much life your pack has left? See how long does a Prius battery last?

Prius c and Prius v use different packs — see the Prius c and Prius v pages. The Prius Plug-in and Prius Prime use larger lithium-ion packs; call us about them. The Lexus CT200h uses the same hybrid system as the Gen 3 — see our CT200h page.

Common Symptoms

  • Red triangle, check engine light and “Check Hybrid System”
  • Battery gauge jumping from full to empty
  • Engine running more often and lower MPG
  • Weak acceleration, especially on hills or highway merges
  • Loud battery cooling fan
  • Car won’t go into READY after sitting

Problems We See by Generation

Gen 2: weak blocks with their own codes

The Gen 2 Prius tells you exactly which block is weak. P3011–P3029 correspond to blocks 1–14 — each block is two modules. With P0A80 and P3000 INFO 123, they point to aging modules — not necessarily a dead battery.

Gen 3: heat and a clogged cooling intake

The Gen 3 doesn’t set a code for each weak block; it reports P0A80 or P0A7F, and we find the weak blocks in live data and load testing. Toyota bulletin T-SB-0074-20 links these codes to dust in the battery cooling fan and filter — so we check the fan every time.

Gen 3: not every warning is the battery

Toyota recalled 2010–2014 Prius models in 2014 for an inverter software update; inverter, sensor and 12V problems can also trigger hybrid warnings. A proper diagnostic sorts that out.

Gen 4: newer, but heat still matters

Most Gen 4 batteries are still healthy, but a blocked intake under the rear seat or a car that sat for months can cause warnings. Some may still be under Toyota’s hybrid battery warranty — check with your VIN.

Car sat for months

A deeply drained pack may need an external charge before testing. See hybrid battery charging.

Warning Codes on the Prius

Codes depend on the generation. Gen 2 cars set P3011–P3029 for individual weak blocks, usually with P0A80 and P3000. Gen 3 and Gen 4 cars report P0A80 or P0A7F, often with INFO code 123. P0AA6 is an isolation fault — not automatically the battery. See our hybrid error code guide.

How DFW Hybrid Battery Handles a Prius

We read every code and block voltage, load-test the pack, check the cooling fan and the 12V battery, and show you the numbers. Then you choose between a module repair and a full rebuild based on real data. A full rebuild means all 28 modules are replaced with tested and matched reconditioned modules (not new) and the pack is balanced.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is a Gen 2 or Gen 3 Prius worth fixing?

Usually yes. A rebuilt battery costs far less than replacing the car, and the rest of the Prius hybrid system is known for being durable.

Can I replace just one bad block?

Sometimes. If the rest of the pack tests healthy, replacing the weak modules and balancing the pack works well. If many modules are close to failing, a full rebuild lasts longer.

Why does my Prius battery fan get loud?

Usually because the intake or fan is clogged and the battery is running hot. It should be cleaned before the pack is damaged.

My Prius sat for months and won’t start. Is the battery dead?

Not necessarily. Check the 12V battery first; if the hybrid pack itself is drained, an external pack charge (from $300) may bring it back.

Does the Prius c or Prius v use the same battery?

No. They use different packs — see their own pages.

Check your VIN for open recalls on NHTSA.gov before paying for any hybrid repair.
